I met Ralph Di Fonzo in 2001 after having been recommended to me by General David Gay, the Adjutant General of the State of Connecticut. My firm, Jennings Smith Associates, LLC was awarded a State Contract to conduct Security Assessments at 13 Regional Vocational Schools. Given Ralph’s background as an FBI Supervisor and Instructor; his Interviewing skills, and knowledge of physical security policies and procedures, I asked him to join our team and assist me on the project. Following a Sunday service at the River Wesleyan Church, Butch asked me about Security protocol at our church. He told me that the issue of church security was weighing heavily on his heart when approximately three hours later, the tragic event that was labeled as the “worst shooting at the First Baptist Church” occurred in Sutherland Springs, Texas. Butch believed that God laid Security on his heart for our church, and we both agreed that his vast experience of the entire Crisis Management Program would be an asset to our church and others.
The next day, our church acquired Butch’s firm to begin the process of an overall Safety and Security Assessment to include our Sunday School. Butch was diligent in assessing and writing the Plans over the next several months and established a Safety Team for Services and events held at the church. Butch also conducted due diligence on all new Staff hires. In light of the darkness that has befallen several churches during our times, every church should implement a Crisis Plan.
